Altinkum

Altinkum was once a thriving fishing village with very little tourist traffic. If you're early enough in the mornings you can still see the boats unloading the days catch.

Some 15-20 years ago, people who knew the Ageans best kept secret headed for Didim, now with its growing popularity Altinkum stands proud a jewel in the crown of Turkey's beach resorts.

Didim had a lot to offer, miles of golden sands where the resort of Altinkum takes its name, it has beaches to rival all others in Turkey, some with the acclaimed Blue Flag status, Altinkum has three main beaches, Beach Dolunay is near the famed Medusa disco and has changed memorably over the years. Though there are still some restaurants with their own patch of beach to provide their customers with the personal touch.

Altinkums popularity has grown not only because of its golden beaches but also due to its easy access to places of interest - like Miletos with its ancient theatre Priene, once a major port flanked at the entrance by two huge stone lions, both of which have stood the test of time and elements. The historical Ephesus - a wonder of the ancient world where you will find a Celsius Library and the house of the Virgin Mary. The local tour companies run orgainsied trips during the season.

Then there is Didim's own Appollon Temple, reached by local mini bus from the resort (they run every 15 mins) If you prefer you can walk from Altinkum to the temple, though morning or early evening is recommended during the high summer.

Altinkum is a resort for the whole family whether you want long lazy days on the beach basking in glorious sunshine or mess about on the water for the more energetic amongst us. There is also a fully qualified diving school for those who wish to explore the Aegean from a different angle. There is an Aqua park just outside Mavisehir a Luna park funfair and even crazy golf.

Altinkum restaurants offer a wide variety of cuisine, your hardest choice will be deciding where to eat, traditional Lokantasi offer Turkish cuisine Turkish Pide (Turkish Pizza) mezes and kebabs and kofte (meatballs) Lahmacun has to be tried once, the Altinkin bakeries are well worth a visit with baked breads, pastries or cakes and for those with a really sweet tooth the honey drenched Baklava really is a must.

Most restaurants offer British favourites from Sunday roasts to fish and chips, there are a few that specialise in British fayre such as home-made pies and pastries, almost all the restaurants offer children's menus with popular dishes such as pizza, sausages and chips or nuggets, along with child sized portions of their menu, there really is something to suit all tastes and appetites.

Altinkum comes to life as the sun goes down, there's a vast array of bars and clubs to while away the evening, from football to formula 1 so the sports fans don't need to miss a thing, there's also quiet as you like bars offering the chance to relax after a hard day sun-bathing, there really is something for everyone.
